About Poznań

Poznań lies half way between Berlin and Warsaw. It is one of the most ancient cities in Poland and a bustling commercial centre. The first international fair was held in the city in 1925, and it has since grown into one of the biggest industrial exhibitions in the world. Poznań has 800,000 inhabitants and the student population is 140,000. There are 22 state and private institutions of higher education.

Poznań's historic monuments tell the story of the city. The oldest parts of Poznań are the Cathedral and the Old Town which has retained its medieval plan with a grid street system and the spacious Old Market Square dominated by a gem of the Polish Renaissance - the Town Hall. On the northern side of Poznań, there is a massive 19th century citadel built by Prussians.

Poznań is the capital of the most affluent province of Poland, with flourishing agriculture and industry.

Poznań is also proud of its rich cultural life. There are theatres, theatre festivals (including the Malta International Theatre Festival with nearly 100 troupes performing in June), concert halls, galleries, museums, international jazz festivals and so on. Leisure facilities in the city are also impressive including the Malta 12ha Sports and Recreation Centre.
